Week 14  ( May 10, 2017 )

Composites

Assignment

read the material safety data sheet (MSDS)

and technical data sheet (TDS) for the resins that you're using design and fabricate a 3D mold (~ft2)and produce a fiber composite part in it

What are composites?

A composite material (also called a composition material or shortened to composite) is a material made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components. Thanks Wikipedia.
The material we get to work with is a canvas bag material or a potato bag material and a epoxy resin.

Design the structure

for the design , I briefed because I already started the design in my previous week that is why I plan to continue with because it is too simple.

then I export the file to .stl format in here I want cut 3d object. for making tool path I am using Art cam.

I open the .stl file in artcam.

How to make 3D Tool path in artcam

Step 1:

For opening the 3d file I used mill wizard, firstly I have open the mill wizard the I browse the designed 3d file then click next

Step 2:

Then the upcoming window we can see the cut direction I choose top direction then I click next

Step 3:

then the new window we can see the dimension check it is same as the design. spatially the z axis then click next

Step 4:

then we can see a cut plane there is two option one is the "center in model" and another one is" bottom of model " I want to mill my design from bottom to top that is why I select "Bottom of model"

Step 5:

In this window, we can see the selection of the tools in here i am using 3mm Roughing tool and 3mm finishing tool that is why i choose both of them 3mm.

Step 6:

In here we want to select the material thickness, I am using 18mm wood for that I select 18mm material. click next

Step 7:

click-→ calculate-→ simulate (we can see the simulated result)

Step 8:

before i choose two type of bits that is why save two of them one is save roughing  and save finishing, I Saved both of them .nc format.

preparing for the composites

mold is ready I start my composite preparation for that I am using   nylon and jute also I am plan to use 4 layers. For the composite we are using amazing crystal resin.

How to do the composites

Step 1:

first, I covered the mold with insulation tape because after the composite there is a chance to stick with mold .

Step 2:

I have to cut the nylon and jute in my design shape

Step 3:

The mixing ratio of crystal resin A&B is 1:2 ratio respectively.

note: when you are mixing the chemicals you have to wear the glows because maybe a chance to make allergy.

Step 4:

Mix the ratio of A&B resin and hardener very well then I have to paste the  resin in the nylon cloth then after I put the cloth above the mold after that I use two layer pasted resin jute and the smooth resin.

The mixing ratio is like 1: 2  and I mixed well to get properly mixed.

Step 5:

I poured the mixture  on the thread mesh and cottons placed over it.

I wrapped up the whole thing with the clinse film. After that I made some air holes with nail.

Step 6:

I placed the whole thing inside the vacuum cover  and removed the air inside it.

Step 7:

Since the setting time for the composite is 24 hour,On next day I  remove the sides and and unwanted portions.

I got my composite design well.

There are some problems in the shape. Because the round shapes are not properly got.
